Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju announced on Wednesday that the first session of the 18th Lok Sabha will commence on June 24, primarily focusing on the oath or affirmation of newly elected members. The session, running until July 3, will include several key events, including the election of the Speaker and the President’s address to the Parliament.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Rijiju stated, “The first session of the 18th Lok Sabha is being summoned from June 24 to July 3 for the oath/affirmation of newly elected Members, Election of Speaker, President’s Address, and discussion thereon. The 264th Session of the Rajya Sabha will commence on June 27 and conclude on July 3.”
The initial three days will see the newly elected members of the Lok Sabha taking their oaths or affirming their memberships. Following this, the election of the Speaker of the House will take place.
President’s Address and Prime Minister’s Council in the Lok Sabha Session
On June 27, President Droupadi Murmu will address a joint session of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, where she is expected to outline the new government’s roadmap for the next five years. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also anticipated to present his council of ministers to Parliament on the same day, following the President’s address.
Debate on the Motion of Thanks
The session will feature a debate on the Motion of Thanks for the President’s address, during which the opposition is expected to vigorously challenge the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government on various issues. The Prime Minister will respond to the debate on the Motion of Thanks in both Houses of Parliament.
Call for Constructive Debate
Announcing the session schedule, Rijiju emphasized the importance of contributions from all members to ensure the smooth running of Parliament. “We have to abide by the people’s mandate. Those who have been given direction by the people to form the government, have to run the government well. Those who have been given the mandate to form the Opposition, they must play the role of a positive Opposition,” he stated.
Rijiju highlighted that every member, regardless of party size, plays a crucial role in Parliament. “Each member’s contribution is required to run Parliament smoothly. I want all parties to come together to run the world’s biggest people’s Parliament. Each party will get an opportunity according to the rules under the guidance of the Rajya Sabha’s Chairman, the Lok Sabha’s Speaker, and the Prime Minister’s vision,” he added.
The Union Minister expressed the nation’s hope for constructive debate in Parliament, stressing the need for a vibrant Parliament to strengthen democracy. “For a strong democracy, a vibrant Parliament is needed,” Rijiju concluded.
