For those who are unaware, the main theme of Jade Halley Bartlett’s film Miller’s Girl is the twisted course of a student-teacher relationship. Jenna Ortega, 21, plays Cairo Sweets, and 52-year-old Martin Freeman plays Jonathan Miller. The movie centres on Ortega’s Sweets as she becomes involved in an appropriate romantic relationship with Miller, all because of a fictitious sex story she writes for a class assignment. Given their 31-year age difference, fans are perplexed by the cinematization of one of their equation’s progressions, which involves physical intimacy between Freeman and Ortega.
While some people think Ortega was just performing as an actress, others are criticising her for the kinds of parts that she chooses to play. “I think I am finally done watching these age gap movies,” said a comment on the internet. Even Jenna recognised the ‘riskiness’ of the subject matter of the movie and said she was surprised by how her character was portrayed. She did, however, recognize the difficult nature of the role and stressed the significance of artists taking chances.
She said “I remember being so taken aback by Cairo because of what I have experienced in my career and I think a lot of young girls can say the same.”
