Encouraged by their success in the recent Lok Sabha elections, the Samajwadi Party (SP) and the Congress are gearing up to jointly contest bypolls in 10 Assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh. This strategic move aims to consolidate their gains and present a formidable challenge to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the upcoming elections.
“Our alliance is based on ideology and mutual trust. We emerged victorious in the Lok Sabha and were able to bring the BJP’s tally down to 33 seats in Uttar Pradesh. We won 43 seats and this partnership will continue in the bypolls. Decision on seat-sharing will be taken by the central leadership. But we are sure of defeating the BJP,” said Anil Yadav, General Secretary of the Uttar Pradesh Congress, in an interview with The Hindu.
Bypolls Triggered by Lok Sabha Wins
Nine MLAs, including SP president Akhilesh Yadav, secured victories in the Lok Sabha elections, necessitating these bypolls. Yadav, who had won the 2022 Assembly election from Karhal, captured the Kannauj Lok Sabha seat. Other SP MLAs transitioning to the Lok Sabha include Ziaur Rehman Barq, who won from the Sambhal seat, Lalji Verma from Ambedkar Nagar, and Awadhesh Prasad from Faizabad, thereby vacating the Kundarki, Katehari, and Milkipur Assembly seats respectively.
BJP MLAs and Disqualifications
In addition to these, four Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLAs have also been elected to the Lok Sabha, prompting further bypolls. These MLAs are Anoop Valmiki from Khair, Atul Garg from Ghaziabad, Praveen Patel from Phulpur, and Vinod Bind from Majhawan. The Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) MLA from Meerapur, Chandan Chauhan, also moved to the Lok Sabha after winning the Bijnor seat.
Moreover, the Sishamau Vidhan Sabha seat will likely fall vacant due to the impending disqualification of its MLA, Irfan Solanki from the SP, who has been sentenced to seven years in prison on charges of arson.
Rural Strongholds and Strategic Contest
Most of the seats heading to bypolls are located in rural areas, where the BJP and the SP have traditionally been in direct competition. The RLD, having secured a victory over the BJP in Meerapur during the previous assembly elections, will also play a critical role in these bypolls.
The SP has indicated its intent to vigorously contest these seats. “Our alliance will definitely continue, there is no doubt. The SP fought most of these seats in 2022. But each worker of the alliance will collectively defeat the BJP,” asserted Sunil Singh Yadav ‘Sajan’, the SP’s national spokesperson.
Congress’s Strategic Edge
The Congress, bolstered by its strong performance in Ghaziabad and Meerapur during the Lok Sabha elections, is expected to leverage this momentum in the upcoming bypolls. Their candidate, Dolly Sharma, garnered over five lakh votes, indicating substantial support and positioning the party as a significant contender in these regions.
The alliance between SP and Congress is seen as a strategic effort to pool resources, consolidate voter bases, and maximize electoral gains. With seat-sharing decisions pending from the central leadership, both parties are preparing for a united front against the BJP.
Future Political Dynamics by SP-Congress Alliance
The outcome of these bypolls could significantly impact the political dynamics in Uttar Pradesh, a crucial state in India’s political landscape. A strong performance by the SP-Congress alliance could set the stage for future electoral strategies and collaborations, potentially influencing the broader political narrative leading up to the next general elections.
In conclusion, the upcoming bypolls in Uttar Pradesh represent a critical juncture for the SP-Congress alliance. Their success in the Lok Sabha elections has laid a strong foundation, but the bypolls will test the resilience and strategic acumen of this partnership. As both parties prepare to battle the BJP in these crucial seats, the political landscape in Uttar Pradesh remains highly dynamic and intensely competitive.
