In the Faizabad Constituency of Uttar Pradesh, which includes Ayodhya City, ‘Awadhesh Prasad’, a Dalit candidate of the Samajwadi Party (SP) won with 54,567 votes, defeating his opponent ‘Lallu Singh’ of the Bharatiya Janata Party, who had been the Faizabad MP since 2014.

Uttar Pradesh is a significant state when it comes to Lok Sabha elections, as the state alone sends 80 MPs from the state to the Parliament. Ayodhya, is where Ram Temple has been recently built and consecrated by the ‘Modi-Yogi’ government, which implied a clear victory for the BJP in the constituency. But as per the Lok Sabha election results that came out on 4 June, people had voted against the BJP government by opting for Awadhesh Prasad, clearly indicating a shift in the sentiments of UP people.
Here’s what BJP candidate Lallu Singh said on being defeated in the constituency:
“There could have been some fault in me. You worked very hard and showed full dedication towards the party. My only request is that it may happen that if you go out in the area, opposition leaders and workers may comment on us. But will have to show tolerance and avoid any unwarranted things. You win some, you lose some in a battlefield,” said Lallu Singh.
Who is Awadhesh Prasad?
Awadhesh Prasad, 78, is a Dalit candidate and one of the founders of Samajwadi Party (SP) of Mulayam Singh Yadav which is now led by Akhilesh Yadav. “BJP brought religion in electoral politics”, said Awadhesh Prasad.
Awadhesh Prasad credited Lord Ram’s blessings for his momentous victory!
“I am fortunate that I was born in Ayodhya. In this Lok Sabha poll, Lord Ram’s benevolence will be on me, and his benevolence cannot be ignored.”
“And who are they (BJP) to bring Lord Ram, when Lord Ram has already been here for years , these people do business in the name of Ram,” he added criticizing BJP.
Ayodhya: Why exactly did the tables turn against BJP?
Commenting on BJP, Akhilesh Yadav said, “People were not given adequate compensation for their land, injustice was done to them, their land was not acquired at par with the market price, you snatched their land forcibly by slapping false cases against them, you destroyed the poor for a sacred work. That is why I think people of Ayodhya and neighboring areas voted against the BJP.”
“Change of Constitution” Controversial Remark by Lallu Singh Backfired on BJP
At a public meeting in Milkipur assembly constituency, in a video that went viral and received much backlash.
Lallu Singh had made a remark on ‘change of constitution’. Here’s what he said, “that even a government formed with a 272-seat majority “cannot amend the Constitution”. For that, or even if a new Constitution is to be made, there is a need of over two-thirds majority.” which backfired against BJP.
Another BJP MP Lallu Singh spits the truth and says BJP needs 400 seats in the Lok Sabha to change the constitution.
Lallu says for Govt, we need only 272 but to change entire constitution, we need 400 seats. Is BJP planning to end reservation and democracy after elections? pic.twitter.com/rtr8y5ujfH

Reason for the defeat? Issues of the Local Population?
Experts and political analysts say that the Dalit and minorities vote in the state favored INDI alliance, and questions of development and unemployment trumped over the “religious” sentiments of people
“Be it widening of roads leading to the Ram Temple or the construction of related projects, scores of people whose families have been residing here for more than 100 years were forced to hand over their properties (shops, homes) to the district administration under the land acquisition drive. This was an issue the BJP failed to recognize but the Opposition addressed,” said Ram Naresh Tiwari.
