The National Testing Agency has announced that the third edition of the Common University Entrance Test-Undergraduate (CUET) will conclude in a week. There will be no score normalization since all exams will take place in a single session. Tests for 15 subjects will be conducted via pen and paper, while for the remaining 48 subjects, exams will be in computer-based mode.
Last Year, the CUET-UG administered for 34 days and 93 shifts, aimed at preventing technical issues that had affected the initial edition of the exam a year prior.
The National Testing Agency (NTA) has stated that this year, more than 13.4 lakh candidates have enrolled for the common entrance test for admission to undergraduate courses across 261 central, state, deemed, and private universities.
What is CUET?
CUET stands for “Central Universities Common Entrance Test.” It’s an entrance examination conducted for admission to various undergraduate and postgraduate courses offered by central universities in India. This exam is similar to other entrance tests like JEE Main, NEET, etc., but it specifically caters to admissions in central universities.
The Government of India introduced it to streamline the admission process for undergraduate programs across central universities.
During the inaugural edition of the exam in 2022, technical issues marred the testing process. Additionally, the extended duration was attributed to certain subjects being conducted across multiple shifts, necessitating score normalization during result announcements.
Previously, the NTA had scheduled the exam to take place from May 15 to 31. However, it has now been announced that the exam will conclude by May 24. In collaboration with the University Grants Commission (UGC), the NTA has decided that subjects with a higher number of applicants will be conducted in pen-paper mode, contrary to the initial plan of all tests being computer-based.
Among the 15 subjects slated for pen-paper mode are chemistry, biology, English, general studies, economics, physics, and mathematics. Except for Hindi and English, all language papers will be conducted via computer-based mode. Additionally, subjects such as psychology, fine arts, fashion studies, anthropology, and legal studies will also be administered in computer-based mode.
CUET Exam To Be Conducted In Hybrid Mode
NTA has been conducting CUET UG examinations online for the past two years. However, this year, the testing agency will be conducting the exam in hybrid mode, enabling candidates, particularly those from rural areas, to take the exams at the nearest centres.
Chairman M Jagadesh Kumar has stated that subjects with higher registration will be administered through the OMR sheet. This approach will enable the NTA to conduct exams for these specific subjects in a single day and a single shift nationwide. Schools, colleges, and educational institutes will serve as exam halls, similar to other exams like NEET.
“The utilization of local facilities will be advantageous for students, particularly those in rural areas, as they won’t need to travel long distances for the exam,” added the UGC chairman.
