At the 2024 Golden Globes, Christopher Nolan triumphantly took home the Best Director-Motion Picture trophy for Oppenheimer, his first victory from six nominations.
Nolan was nominated for an Academy Award at the 81st Golden Globe Awards alongside Martin Scorsese (Killers of the Flower Moon), Celine Song (Past Lives), Yorgos Lanthimos (Poor Things), and Bradley Cooper (Maestro).
In addition to Nolan’s victory, Oppenheimer took home honours for Best Original Score, Best Actor in a Dramatic Picture, and Best Supporting Actor. The Best Drama award went to the movie as well.
Cillian Murphy talking about his role:
Working together for almost two decades, Christopher Nolan and Cillian Murphy have directed six films together, including the beloved ‘Peaky Blinders’ flicks ‘Inception,’ ‘Dunkirk,’ and ‘Oppenheimer.’ Notably, though, Oppenheimer was the Murphy’s first leading role in a Nolan film with the World War 2 atomic bomb drama. Cillian Murphy said that he “was desperate” to play the lead in a Nolan film.
“I’ve always told Chris, both in public and in private, that if you want me in a movie and I’m available, I’m there. The size of the part doesn’t really matter to me,” Murphy remarked. However, he admitted that he was secretly itching to play a lead.Based on Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin’s 2005 book ‘ ‘American Prometheus,’ ‘Oppenheimer’ follows a physicist as he struggles to create the atomic bomb during World War II.
“You understand how big of a responsibility this is.” Cillian Murphy praised the character, saying, “He was so iconic, so contradictory, so complicated.” But Murphy knows the fact that he was working with one of the greatest directors of all time. It gave him confidence to go in with Chris.
Cillian Murphy said Nolan greatly influenced his life both artistically and professionally. Nolan gave him a lot of interesting roles, and they’ve all been really difficult for him. Additionally, Murphy adores being on his sets.
The all-star cast of “Oppenheimer,” which stars Robert Downey Jr. as Lewis Strauss, a founding commissioner of the US Atomic Energy Commission, Emily Blunt as Katherine “Kitty” Oppenheimer, and Matt Damon as Manhattan Project director Gen. Leslie Groves Jr., join Murphy. Starring with her are Florence Pugh, Benny Safdie, Michael Angarano, Josh Hartnett, Dylan Arnold, David Krumholtz, Alden Ehrenreich, and Matthew Modine.
Rober Downey Jr. Won Best Male Actor in Golden Globes:
The biopic film Oppenheimer, directed by Christopher Nolan, earned actor Robert Downey Jr. the Best Supporting Male Actor – Motion Picture Golden Globe. Following Ally McBeal, Sherlock Holmes, and Short cuts, this is his fourth Golden Globe victory.
Standing ovations greeted the Avengers actor as he entered the stage to collect his prize. As he stepped onto the stage, he exclaimed, “This will be easy because I took a beta blocker.”
In Christopher Nolan’s biographical film, Lewis Strauss (played by Cillian Murphy) was portrayed by Robert Downey Jr. Lewis Strauss later became J Robert Oppenheimer’s political rival after contributing significantly to the development of the atomic bomb.
Barbie, a fantasy comedy, and Oppenheimer had a run-in at the box office on July 21, of last year. With a global box office gross of over $950 million, the movie debuted to immense critical and commercial acclaim, making it the highest-grossing biopic of all time.
