Heatwave persists in parts of India, as per the latest bulletin from the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha, and Bihar are facing extreme heatwave conditions. Maximum temperatures ranging from 42°C to 45°C are expected in areas of Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal on Monday. Meanwhile, regions including eastern Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Telangana, as well as parts of Vidarbha, Marathwada, central Maharashtra, and north interior Karnataka will experience temperatures between 40°C and 42°C. Similar temperatures are anticipated in isolated pockets of Chhattisgarh, Saurashtra, and Kutch, IMD stated.

The intense heat is forecasted to persist until May 2, with sporadic pockets of heatwave conditions expected in Rayalaseema, interior Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana. Additionally, regions including West Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, Kerala, Mahe, Coastal Karnataka, Telangana, and the coastal areas of Konkan and Goa are also likely to be affected by the heatwave conditions.
Soma Sen Roy, a senior scientist at IMD, informed a news agency, ANI, “Severe heatwave conditions are also prevailing in Odisha, particularly in North Odisha, although not as intense as in West Bengal but severe enough for several days, prompting a red alert for this region as well.”
In a recent announcement, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) confirmed that 2023 has claimed the title of ‘the hottest year on record.’ The global average near-surface temperature surged to 1.45 degrees Celsius above the pre-industrial baseline.
“The global mean near-surface temperature in 2023 was 1.45 ± 0.12 degrees Celsius above the pre-industrial 1850–1900 average. 2023 marked the warmest year in the 174-year observational record, surpassing the previous records set by 2016 at 1.29 ± 0.12 degrees Celsius above the 1850–1900 average and 2020 at 1.27 ± 0.13 degrees Celsius,” stated the WMO in March of this year.
Maximum Temperature by IMD
On Saturday, Panagarh in Paschim Bardhaman district marked West Bengal’s highest temperature at 44.6 degrees Celsius, with Kolkata recording a maximum of 41.1 degrees Celsius for the day. Other areas experiencing temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius include Medinipur (43.5), Bankura (43.2), Barrackpore (43.2), Bardhaman (43), Asansol (42.5), Purulia (42.7), and Sriniketan (42).
In Odisha, Angul reached a scorching 44.7 degrees Celsius, with Bhubaneswar hitting 44.6 degrees Celsius, surpassing the 44-degree mark for the first time this season. Additionally, Baripada recorded 44.2 degrees Celsius, while Boudh, Dhenkanal, and Bhawanipatna registered maximum temperatures of 43.7 degrees Celsius on Saturday.
The weather office predicts a gradual rise in daytime temperatures by one to two degrees Celsius over the next three days, followed by relatively stable conditions for the subsequent two days.

Rain Forecast by IMD
The weather agency anticipates light rainfall with thunderstorms in Jammu and Kashmir, and Tamil Nadu on Sunday morning. Additionally, the IMD forecasts rain and lightning in Madhya Pradesh, the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra, and northern Telangana this morning. Similarly, it predicts light rainfall with thunderstorms in the northeastern states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, eastern Meghalaya, Nagaland, and Manipur on Sunday.
Furthermore, intermittent rain, thunderstorms, and hail struck various regions of Himachal Pradesh on Saturday, with the tribal areas experiencing new snowfall, leading to a significant drop in temperatures. Due to these weather conditions, more than 60 roads, including Atal Tunnel-Rohtang Pass, Grmphu-Losar, and Darcha-Sarchu, were shut for traffic.
The regional IMD office has issued an orange warning for heavy rain, thunderstorms, hail, and gusty winds at isolated locations on Monday, along with a yellow alert for thunderstorms, hail, and gusty winds at isolated spots on Sunday and Tuesday in the hill state.
