Tuberculosis – Essential nutritional tips to prevent this disease
HT Lifestyle, Dr Santosh N, Senior Consultant Pediatrician and Neonatologist at Apollo Cradle and Children’s Hospital in Bangalore’s Jayanagar suggested some important nutritional tips for children that will help to prevent TB.
Balanced diet
Diet is very important to stay healthy and fit and parents must definitely ensure that their children are receiving foods rich in vitamins, minerals and macronutrients. A variety of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains and dairy products provide essential nutrients necessary for a robust immune system.
Vitamin D
Adequate intake of foods that are rich in Vitamin D is essential for the proper functioning of the immune system. Children should be encouraged to spend time outside in the sunlight and include vitamin D-rich foods like fortified milk, fish, and eggs in their diet.
Vitamin C
This antioxidant vitamin mainly helps to protect the body against infections. Incorporate citrus fruits, strawberries, bell peppers, and broccoli into the meals of your children.
Zinc rich foods
Foods that are rich in zinc should be definitely incorporated into the meals of your children as they play a crucial role in the immune function. Food like lean meats, nuts, and whole grains are excellent sources of zinc.
Probiotics
This is a “good” bacteria which mainly supports gut health and is also linked with the smooth functioning of the immune system. Yoghurt, kefir and fermented foods can help maintain a healthy gut microbiome.
Avoid processed foods
Excessive intake of sugar and processed foods can weaken the immune system which in turn can affect the body with various diseases. Limiting the consumption and focusing on whole, natural foods is beneficial.
Incorporating these beneficial nutritional tips into a child’s daily routine can definitely help strengthen their immune system and reduce the risk of TB. In addition to these, maintaining good hygiene practices, ensuring proper ventilation and vaccination are crucial elements in the comprehensive approach to TB prevention in children.
