This Friday, Sir Keir Starmer won more than 400 of the 650 seats in the UK general election, bringing Labour Party back to power after 14 years in opposition, beating the Conservative Party’s Rishi Sunak. With results in 648 out of 650 seats of the House of Commons declared, Labour has won 412 seats, while the Tories are down to only 121.
Who is Sir Keir Starmer?
Sir Keir Starmer, born on September 2, 1962, is a British politician and barrister. He studied Law at the University of Leeds, graduating with a first-class degree in 1985.
He then pursued a Bachelor of Civil Law at the University of Oxford. Before coming into politics, Starmer was a human rights lawyer and public prosecutor, overseeing high profile cases such as the phone hacking scandals.
He identifies as progressive and as a socialist. He has been issued with six honorary degrees from the University of Leeds, the University of Essex, the University of East London, the University of Reading, the University of Worcester and the London School of Economics.
He has been Member of Parliament (MP) for Holborn and St Pancras since 2015, and previously was Director of Public Prosecutions from 2008 to 2013. The Labour Party secured 412 seats in the 650-member House of Commons, up 211 from the last election in 2019. Sunak’s Conservatives won just 121 seats, down 250 seats from the previous election. While the Labour had a vote share of 33.7 per cent the Conservatives had 23.7 per cent.
