Cannes: The prestigious 77th annual Cannes Film Festival is all set to take place from 14th May to 25th May 2024.
‘Manthan’, (trans. The Churning) an artistic masterpiece, directed by a renowned Indian filmmaker, is to be screened at the grand festival under the Classic selection in its 4K restored version. Shyam Benegal is a prolific filmmaker, known for his contributions in the parallel cinema movement of India.
Manthan Plot: Portrayal of the father of White Revolution of India
Inspired by Dr. Verghese Kurien, the architect of White Revolution of India, “Manthan,”” tracks down the genesis and development of the largest historical milk cooperative movement that was born in rural Gujarat in the year 1970. This film depicts the initiatives taken by Dr. Verghese Kurien on the grassroot level to transform the situation of the farmers of Gujarat.
It is entirely a crowd sourced film that was financed by 500,000 farmers who contributed Rs.2 each for the production of the film, later known as Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation Limited. With a legendary cast including actors such Naseeruddin Shah, Smita Patil, and Girish Karnad, this film has won two National awards in the country for Best Feature Film in Hindi and Best Screenplay.
The restoration of this iconic film was done by Shivendra Singh Dungarpur, founder of Film Heritage Foundation, at Prasad Corporation, Chennai in collaboration with Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Foundation (GCMMF) to make it reach the audience around the world.

Payal Kapadia’s ‘All we Imagine as Light’ is the first Indian film that is nominated, in the last three decades, to be competing for the prestigious Palme d’Or trophy this year. Other selections to be screened at Cannes include Sandhya Suri’s, ‘Santosh’, Maisam Ali’s ‘In Retreat’, Karan Kandhari’s Radhika Apte starrer, ‘Sister Midnight’, ‘Kooki’, Chidananda Naik’s 16-min short ‘Sunflowers Were The First One To Know’, and ‘The Shameless’.
The grand 77th annual Cannes Film festival will be held at Palais des Festivals et des Congrès and will be hosted by French actress Camille Cottin. Jury President Greta Gerwig, along with her 8 jury members will decide the winner of the Cannes film festival.
