The National Testing Agency (NTA) conducted the UGC-NET June 2024 examination on June 18. The very next day, on June 19, the Ministry of Education announced the cancellation of the examination due to inputs from the National Cyber Crime Threat Analytics Unit of the Indian Cyber Coordination Centre (I4C), pointing to the “compromised integrity” of the examination.
UGC-NET 2024: Details of the Exam
The exam was pen and paper based. It was held in two shifts.The first shift was conducted from 9.30 am to 12.30 pm and the second shift from 3 pm to 6 pm. The test had been conducted in 317 cities, and around 11,21,225 candidates had appeared for it in around 1205 centers across the country.Nearly 11 Lakh students will have to retake the UGC-NET 2024 exam. Additionally, the matter is being handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation for complete investigation.
“A fresh date for the exam will be announced soon,” says officials.

What is UGC-NET conducted by NTA?
The University Grants Commission National Eligibility Test (UGC-NET) is a standardized test in India, conducted twice a year. The test determines the eligibility of students for the positions of assistant professor, as well as for awarding of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) in Indian universities and colleges.
Background of National Testing Agency
Established in 2017, the National Testing Agency (NTA) is an independent organization under the Department of Higher Education of India. It conducts national-level entrance examinations such as NEET, CMAT, CUET, JEE MAIN, GPAT, UGC-NET, CSIR-NET for admission and fellowship in higher educational institutions. The agency is currently chaired by educationist Pradeep Kumar Joshi, a former chairman of UPSC.
NEET UG 2024 Exam Controversy
Since the beginning of the month, there has been significant public outrage nationwide regarding the NEET UG 2024 medical entrance test. Students have been protesting for the cancellation and retake of NEET UG 2024.
Conducted on May 5, the exam had about 24 lakhs students participating. However, major backlash emerged following the announcement of the results on June 4. The exam body has faced several accusations regarding the unfair conduct of the examination. Allegations of paper leaks and inflation of grace marks to several students, have taken a legal turn. The Supreme Court decision is awaited.
