Users will be able to share files with people nearby thanks to a new feature that WhatsApp is reportedly working on. Like Android’s “Nearby Share” feature, WhatsApp’s file-sharing function requires users being in close proximity to one another.
WhatsApp new file-sharing feature:
As per a recent report by WABetaInfo, users on WhatsApp beta for Android 2.24.2.17 can now access the upcoming file-sharing feature, which requires opening a new section in order to send and receive files.
Additionally, it appears that in order to generate a share request, users must shake their devices, and files can only be sent to people on their contact list. File sharing will feature end-to-end encryption, just like text messages and phone calls.
Although the functionality may seem similar to what Android has been doing for years, the improved encryption and the phone’s ability to stay hidden from people who aren’t in your contact list make the new feature useful for sharing images or videos with people you meet in public.
The file-sharing feature is reportedly being developed and may become available in a later version of the app, though it is not yet known if or when it will be made available on the stable version of the app.
Other new feature:
WhatsApp is apparently working on a new “calendar search” feature that will make it easier for users to locate older messages.
Recently, WhatsApp added a number of new features to Channels that enhance the overall user experience. These features include the ability to send voice updates and create polls for Channels.
