A new feature that allows users to sort videos by colour has been added to YouTube’s homepage. To enhance the browsing experience and improve the visual appeal, the streaming platform has incorporated filter options such as Red, Blue, and Green that allow users to filter content based on the thumbnail colour.
YouTube new filter option
Few users have reportedly been able to access the feature, which is still in its experimental stage. Still, we were able to see the new feature on a few Android and iPhone phones. The homepage features other filter options, like “New To You,” “Mixes,” “Music,” and other user-related YouTube streaming options, in addition to the colour filter option. Notably, this feature adds a new option at the top but does not modify the default homepage feed. A new pop-up window asking if you want to try something new and giving you the option to create a video page in red, blue, or green will appear on your mobile device if the YouTube app has been updated.
It’s interesting to note that, based on the filter option that some phones offer, YouTube’s enigmatic algorithm appears to favour videos with a prominent colour in their thumbnails. It appears that YouTube merely groups the videos according to colour to give the site more aesthetic appeal. However, the feature does not use any other criteria to sort videos.
YouTube still exploring new feature
A YouTube representative, Allison Toh, confirmed the feature to The Verge, stating that its new “create a video feed based on colour” option is currently limited to “some users on Android and iOS mobile devices.” He did not, however, disclose the rationale behind the feature’s development or offer an official statement from YouTube regarding its intentions regarding the timing (or lack thereof) of its general release.
The colour-coded video feed experiment that YouTube recently tried is not a novel concept. Analogously, numerous platforms enable users to filter content in a more aesthetically pleasing manner. For easier organisation and management, macOS users can label their files and folders with colour. Similarly, these new YouTube colour codes might be helpful, but only for a specific user base.
Special application for Apple Vision Pro
A specific YT app for the Apple Vision Pro headset is also scheduled to be released by YT in the interim. A representative for the business told The Verge that Google intends to release the Vision Pro app for its streaming service shortly. “We’re thrilled about Vision Pro’s debut, and we’re helping it along by making sure YT viewers have an excellent Safari experience. A Vision Pro app is on our roadmap, but we do not currently have any specific plans to share,” stated Jessica Gibby.
The US is now able to purchase Apple’s new VR headset, the Vision Pro. Nevertheless, the iPad apps for Netflix, Spotify, and YT are not compatible with the Vision Pro headset. The Verge was informed by Apple spokesperson Jackie Roy that YT’s VR and 360 videos aren’t compatible with the Vision Pro.
He said “A large portion of this content was produced for gadgets that don’t offer a very good spatial experience. This content may occasionally make motion uncomfortable as well. Our efforts have been concentrated on providing the greatest spatial media experience we can, which includes 3D movies accessible on Apple TV, spatial images and videos, and Apple Immersive Video,” the spokesperson concluded.
