On Friday night, Shiv Sena leader Mahesh Gaikwad got shot by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA, Ganpat Gaikwad in Maharashtra’s Ulhasnagar, near Mumbai, over a land dispute.
Clash between Two Politicians
According to Additional CP Shinde, Ganpat Gaikwad’s son had come to the police station to lodge a complaint in connection with a land dispute. Then two politicians, Mahesh Gaikwad and Ganpat Gaikwad, and their supporters came to the station to file a complaint against each other. Mahesh Gaikwad and Ganpat Gaikwad were having a conversation inside the cabin of a senior inspector Anil Jagtap, at Hill Line police station. The conversation turned into an argument and Ganpat Gaikwad shot four rounds of bullets at Mahesh Gaikwad. Mahesh Gaikwad’s associate also got injured.
Mahesh Gaikwad was initially admitted to Mira Hospital in Ulhasnagar and then shifted to Jupiter Hospital in Thane at around 11 pm because of his critical condition. Shiv Sena leader’s supporters gathered in the hospital and increased the tension. The FIR was registered against BJP MLA.
DCP Sudhakar Pathare said, “Mahesh Gaikwad and Ganpat Gaikwad had differences about something, and they came to the police station to make a complaint. At that time, they talked, and Ganpat Gaikwad fired at Mahesh Gaikwad and his people. Two people have been injured in this. An investigation is underway.”
No Regrets says BJP MLA
Ganpat Gaikwad represents the Kalyan East constituency in Kalyan, which is about 40 km from Mumbai. His party (BJP) is in alliance with Eknath Shinde’s Sena in the Maharashtra government. While talking to a news channel, he said, ” Yes, I shot (Him) myself, I have no regrets.” He said that he would accept the decision of the court taken on this incident. He added that he wants to tell the people that “he is not a criminal” and that the public trusts him and that trust won’t break as they “know him well.”
Response of Leaders
Maharashtra Deputy CM and Home Minister Devendra Fadanavis ordered a high-level inquiry into the incident. Deputy CM and NCP leader Ajit Pawar stated, “Party representatives should remember that the rights that have been given to us by the Constitution should not be misused in this way. We got to know about it late last night. All the rules are the same for everyone.”
Leader of Opposition, Vijay Wadettiwar said, “There is no law order in this country.” And added that this is just the beginning, as the elections come closer, the loot-maar will also increase.”It also draws a question on the hold the chief minister has in the state.”
