Neckties were usually worn by great politicians, business personnel, and managers as donning ties on important and crucial occasions highlights good manners and a humble personality. But, when loosened or removed, it could reveal a different person.
More than 2,000 years ago, men already draped scarves or shawls around their necks. One such forerunner of the modern-day tie can be seen in the soldiers of the famous Terracotta Army in China. Nearly 8,000 clay warriors who guarded the tomb of the first Chinese emperor, Qin Shi Huang, wore dressy scarves around their necks.
During the Thirty Years’ War (1618-1648), Croatian mercenaries wore scarves around their necks — which instantly grabbed the interest of the French king Louis XIV. He was so impressed that later, he introduced them in a courtly fashion. They were then tied around the neck to form a collar ornament, sometimes even decorated with lace.
Neckties: A sign of Authority
The necktie first came into fashion during the 19th century, and since then, it has become a trend to wear neckties when visiting any special occasion. Initially worn as a short and wide length of fabric, it became longer and narrower over time.
Whether worn as a fashion accessory or as a status symbol, a tie always gives its wearer a sense of dignity, authority, and respect. In certain professions, it is often mandatory for men to wear a tie as a manager, bankers, newscasters, representatives, and politicians.

The symbolic power of a tie does not end when it is loosened or taken off. It has its own power and sense of respect as it allows its wearer to flaunt it on any occasion. Many male politicians like to take off their ties to be “one of us.” This also inspires trust and makes people’s representatives more approachable and human.

Wearing a tie to weddings, funerals, or job interviews is still seen as a sign of good manners and respect. If no other dress code is specified for a wedding, a man definitely wears a tie. Those who work in corporate sectors also need a neat appearance as it defines their personality, so they must have an assortment of ties in their wardrobe anyway. While men are subject to the tie obligation in certain situations, women are completely exempt from it.
However, women also love wearing ties but basically with formal attire as it makes them look smart and sober. With time, neckties evolved a lot, and now, it is mostly worn as a sign of fashion and style rather than a status symbol.
