The Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and the Kisan Mazdur Morcha have announced the ‘Delhi Chalo’ march demanding a law guaranteeing Maximum Support Price (MSP) for their crop.
Farmers’ march organized by more than 200 farmers’ Unions is going to start today (February 13th), a significant number of farmers from Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh are expected to join the march.
Govt Orders to stop Farmers
To stop the farmer’s proposed ‘Delhi Chalo’ march, Section 144 has been imposed on the Delhi-UP border and large gatherings are also banned at the Shahadaro and Gandhi Nagar areas of Delhi.
Haryana government sealed the state border joining Punjab with barbed wires and concrete blocks. Delhi Police issued a traffic advisory to prevent traffic on roads. Security barricades have been installed at the Singhu, Ghazipur, and Tikki borders. Nail barriers have been spread on roads to stop vehicles or tractors of farmers from entering the Capital, as in Rajpura, farmers readied their tractors to head towards Delhi.
“As many as 1,000 to 1,500 Delhi Police personnel will be deployed in each of these border areas. However, the pattern of deployment and the number of personnel will change as per the situation in these areas,” said the source.
Punjab-Haryana borders in Ambala, Jind, and Fatehabad districts have been sealed. Arrangements have been made to keep a check on bus stands, railway stations, metro stations, and roads to stop farmers march. The Haryana government has also ordered the suspension of mobile internet services in seven districts Ambala, Kurukshetra, Kaithal, Hisar, Sirsa, Jind, and Fatehabad.
Farmer’s Demand
Farmers have several demands such as MSP, a condition which they had agreed to withdraw their protest in 2021.
They are also demanding the implementation Swaminathan Commission Recommendation, pension for farmers and farm laborers, withdrawal of police cases, and justice for victims of Kheri and Lakhimpur violence.
They are demanding compensation for their lands from authorities, and demanding jobs, and medical facilities for their families. For which Farmers from Noida and Greater Noida showed their protest on Thursday, causing heavy traffic jam on Noida Expressway.
“We (Farmers) will start from Beas and stay at Fatehgarh Sahib. Our demands are the same – the MSP guarantee law and that sugar cane should be joined with C200. When a farmer turns 60 years old he should be given Rs 10,000 a month,” said Punjab Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee general secretary Sarvan Singh Pandher.
Opposition Leaders Response
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said, “Those who put obstacles in the path of farmers are not worthy of trust, uproot them from Delhi.”
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, shared a video on X, of spike barriers on the road and said, ” Is laying thorns and nails in the path of farmers ‘amritkaal’ or ‘anyaykaal’?
Punjab CM and AAP leader Bhagwant Mann drew a parallel between the roads of Delhi-Haryana to the India-Pakistan border and said, “I urge the Centre to hold talks with farmers and accept their genuine demands… There are as many wires put up on the roads (Punjab-Haryana borders) to go to Delhi as there are at the border with Pakistan.”
