On Monday, Fire broke out inside the ‘garbha griha’ (sanctum sanctorum) of Mahakala temple in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, in the early hours of Holi. At least 13 devotees including a priest were injured and taken to the hospital.
Fire at Mahakal Temple
During Bhasmarti, when devotees were showering colors ‘gulal’ on diety, as part of Holi celebrations, a fire broke out and injured them, temple management committee chairman and Ujjain collector Neeraj Kumar said.
Eyewitnesses said the fire might have ignited due to chemicals in gulal (colors).
“Some of the injured have been referred to Indore,” said the collector. He has ordered a magisterial probe and submission of the report from Zilla Panchayat CEO Mrunal Meena and additional collector Anukul Jain within three days.
Minister’s Response
Union Home Minister said, “The local administration is providing all help and treatment available to the injured.”
“The incident of fire at the ‘garba griha’ of Mahakal Temple during ‘bhasma aarti’ is unfortunate. I have been in touch with the administration since morning. Everything is under control. I pray to Baba Mahakal for the quick recovery of all injured,” the Chief Minister Mohan Yadav wrote on X.
