The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) elections saw a swept student union elections at JNU, winning all four central panel seats president, vice-president, general secretary, and joint secretary. The elections were held on Friday, March 20th, and the result was declared on Sunday, March 25th. These are the first student body elections conducted at the university since 2019.
JNUSU Elections
For the elections, student organizations such as the All India Students’ Association (AISA), Democratic Students Federation (DSF), Students’ Federation of India (SFI), and the All India Students’ Federation (AISF) formed a united Left front, facing off against the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) student outfit Akhil Bharatiya Vidhyarti Parishad (ABVP).
A total of 19 candidates were contesting for positions on the central panel of JNUSU, with eight candidates for the president seat.
Elections Result
Dhananjay from the left was elected as President, defeating Umesh Chandra Ajmeera of ABVP by 922 votes.

A total of 42 councilors were elected for various schools of the University (JNU).
First Dalit President
Dhananjay, a Ph.D. student from the School of Arts and Aesthetics, and a resident of Gaya, Bihar, has become the first Dalit JNUSU president since Batti Lal Bairwa in 1996-97 (after 27 years).
During the JNUSU Presidential debate, held on Wednesday night, Dhananjay raised concerns about the increased fees due to Higher Education Funding Agency Loans taken by the University.
He also pleaded to tackle health, water, and infrastructure-related problems on the University campus. Additionally, demanded the release of student leaders detained under sedition charges.
