Samsung revealed its new flagship Galaxy S24 smartphone lineup on Wednesday. The company is aiming to start 2024 strong by showcasing new AI features.
There are three variants of the S24 range available: the S24, S24+, and S24 Ultra, as is currently the norm with Samsung’s flagship line. Starting at $1,300 for the S24 Ultra, $1,000 for the S24+, and $800 for the S24, are the prices of these devices.
Samsung Galaxy S24 Flagship:
Before the announcement, earlier this week, the South Korean electronics giant unveiled the new devices at its Kings Cross offices in London. During a press briefing, Samsung showcased the phone’s artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities, demonstrating its ability to alter photos and perform object searches.
Samsung is utilising an optimised version of Qualcomm’s most recent Snapdragon Series 8 Gen 3 for use with its flagship S24 Ultra, the largest of the company’s three smartphones with punchier specs and features. For its S24 and S24+ models, the company uses a combination of internal Exynos chipset and Qualcomm systems-on-chips (SoCs).
“The Galaxy S24 series devices, along with Google’s Pixel range, mark the dawn of the consumerization of AI in smartphones,” stated Ben Wood, chief analyst at CCS Insight. He added “This is a trend that will be echoed by all smartphone makers, including Apple, as they increasingly add a growing number of AI-powered capabilities to their new devices.”
With this launch, Samsung is putting its investment on artificial intelligence-powered features to attract consumers’ interest in smartphones at a time when sales have slowed due to modest hardware updates. With its Pixel lineup, Google has led the way, and it seems inevitable that this trend will continue—not just for smartphones but for all consumer electronics in general.
Samsung Galaxy S24 with no hardware changes:
For most tech enthusiasts, the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra is a big deal, and in terms of appearance, it doesn’t really differ much from the Galaxy S23 Ultra.
This is due to their lack of significant hardware changes. Even though the phone is flatter this time around, it still has the same 6.8-inch diagonal display as its predecessor. There was greater curvature on the S23 Ultra.
This model’s titanium case makes it much more solid than the S23 Ultra, which is a major improvement to the external hardware.
Samsung enhancing AI features:
This time, however, the primary distinction lies within: Samsung is making significant strides in artificial intelligence. Like other smartphone manufacturers, Samsung has made it a priority to implement the most requested AI features, which are essentially the ability to run AI workloads locally on a device as opposed to through the cloud.
Many of the new AI features that Samsung claims the Galaxy S24 Ultra will have are powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset for mobile, which is designed specifically for AI devices.
The ability to circle objects or places a user is pointing their camera at, or on a picture they’ve taken, and then look up information about what those things are, is one feature Samsung loaded into the Galaxy S24 range.
The capability of using AI to edit photos is another feature that Samsung promoted. In this way, users can remove reflections from photos they’ve taken—for example, if you took a self-portrait in front of a window. Alternatively, you can drag someone from left to right to move them from one side of the room to the other.
Samsung also demonstrated live transcription capabilities on its most recent mobile devices. Company also needed to consider the implications of its AI features for issues like privacy and copyright infringement.
Playing with AI:
Innumerable instances of people using AI to produce images and other creative media and pass it off as their own have been documented in the past year, even though in some cases the work is directly inspired by or even looks exactly like that of artists.
As a result, when a user of a Galaxy S24 manipulates a photo using AI, Samsung records the modifications made using AI and stores them in the metadata. Additionally, it will have a watermark-like icon in the lower left corner to indicate that AI was used to alter the image.
Ben Wood stated, “The success of Samsung’s AI-based features will largely depend on Samsung’s ability to raise consumer awareness and engagement via its marketing for the Galaxy S24 portfolio.” He said “Success will require crisp communication of the benefits and continued expansion of the use cases.”
