World Radiography Day is celebrated mainly to increase public knowledge and awareness about the critical role that radiotherapy, diagnostic imaging and radiographers play in the healthcare sector. It is basically an awareness campaign which makes people aware of the dedication and hard work that the radiographers do every day. Today radiographers take as an advantage to promote the importance of radiography in healthcare, a vital component which needs deep awareness among the people.
Radiography is an essential part of the healthcare sector and to mark the importance this day is celebrated. Let’s have a look at the date, theme, history and significance of World Radiography Day.
Radiography Day 2023 – Date
World Radiography Day is widely celebrated all over the world on November 8th, 2023.
Radiography Day 2023 – Theme
The theme of this year’s World Radiography Day is “Celebrating Patient Safety”. The main aim of the theme is to highlight the complexities that radiographers come through and their work towards maintaining the effectiveness of the healthcare system and ensuring the well-being of the patients which extends beyond the field of radiation protection.
History of World Radiography Day
The day is mainly celebrated to commemorate the discovery of X-radiation, or X-rays, by German physicist Wilhelm Conrad Rontgen. He was the first recipient of the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1901. The European Society of Radiology (ESR), the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), and the American College of Radiology (ACR) collaborated to celebrate the first World Radiography Day in 2012. This day is also celebrated by a number of organizations in the world including the Association of Radiographers in Nigeria and the Society of Radiographers (SoR) in the UK.
Significance of World Radiography Day
World Radiography Day is important because it celebrates the critical role that medical imaging professionals and radiographers play in the delivery of high-quality and safe healthcare. This day mainly draws attention to radiation protection, the safety of the patients and the smooth functioning of the healthcare systems. Unsafe care can lead to many adverse circumstances that can lead to abnormalities in the body or even death. In high-income countries, this situation is more serious as one in ten patients is at risk during hospital care. This day therefore marks the importance of radiography in patient diagnosis and care.
